Good news on the Wardrobe Front!

When I read the school uniform, it said that children had to wear collared shirts.  Without questioning, I assumed this meant ALL clothing had to be collared.

So I commenced my search for cute collared shirts and dresses.  This WAS A TASK!  After all, Lallie is only 30 pounds and there aren't many clothing lines that make quality collared dresses and shirts in her smaller size (yes, I tried Polo....they wore holes in the seams after three washes!  At nearly $30 or more a pop....no thanks!)

I prefer dresses for her, especially in winter (with tights and leggings) because she's so tall!  Pants are horribly hard to fit her tiny waist, but be long enough.  Most pants that fit are 4" too short.  Not too long ago, I put her in a pair of shorts and she complained that they hurt.  After closely looking, they fit her waist but were so short on the inseam they were hurting her.  Skirts and dresses are her typical outfits for this reason.

(Side note: I've taken all her barely worn pants from her 18-24 month stage in pink, khaki and white and hemmed them into capris....this helps with her fall/early winter wardrobe as it stays hot here well into December.  Yes, these do fit her in the inseam area....for now).

Anyways, I purchased collared items from Children's Place, Old Navy, Osk Kosh, Land's End and Gap.  She has several collared shirts (which she needed) and maybe 7 or 8 dresses.  (Note: I've washed them all on gentle and on low dry for fear of shrinkage, fading and tearing....so far so good. I'm really worried about the quality.)

And, back to the story again....Lallie, being the girl she is, wanted to wear dresses this week.   So off she went in her adorable pink dress on Wednesday and a navy one yesterday (which I plan to embroider her first initial on in white).  Complete with new mary-janes and frilly socks....off she went to Kindergarten.

Then yesterday morning, I received a message from one of my friends who happens to be the room mom.  "Did anyone tell you they don't have to wear collared dresses, just as long as they have thick straps and aren't low cut?"  What? No!  No one told me this!  This is fabulous!

YAY, no collared dressess!!!  SO....Lallie was thrilled to wear her newest little Lilly today.  She received it for her birthday from a friend.  So she trekked off to school this morning in her dress, frilly socks, a BIG pink flower headband and little pink slip ons.  She even let me fix her hair this morning!  I have to say, she was mighty cute!  :-)

I'll have to get a picture of her after school today for you!

This makes her wardrobe SO much easier to handle especially come this fall.  Tights and dresses it is!  After all, any pants that will fit her waste are about 4" too short!  Haha!  AND because she hasn't gained much weight or grown too tall, nearly all of her barely worn dresses from last winter still fit (remember, we only wear winter clothes for a few weeks a year and usually it's while we're up north visiting family!)

I'll be back next week with pictures from Disney and Apalachicola (they are mostly on Husband's phone).  AND, I'll let you know how Lallie did with her first week of school and the new schedule.  She's doing well, but she's super tired which makes for interesting evenings right now.  She'll get used to it bur for now, we're looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow!

Happy Friday Y'all!

First Day of Kindergarten!

We have been off enjoying some last minute vacation time before school started.  Took a trip to Disney (thank goodness we live close because I can't handle more than two days at a time!) and then headed up to Apalachicola to visit my parents.  Pictures soon!

But yesterday....oh yesterday was...
Lallie's first day of Kindergarten!

Oh my stars, where has the time gone!  Husband and I both took her to class.  We are allowed to walk her in the first day only, after that we have to deal with car line (a whole other beast!)

Here's a picture of Daddy walking our sweet, sweet baby girl to class.  She looks so tiny and the backpack looks so big!  I didn't cry.  I welled up quite a bit, especially when we saw our friends taking their kids, but I never cried (for Lallie's sake, you know).  Lallie cried a bit when we left but we were told by friends that she stopped immediately and went right to work!  Yay!

Lallie LOVES her teacher and happens to be in the same class as her best friend!  In fact, they are sitting right next to each other for the first few weeks.  We wonder how that will work out, we'll see!  They are both great students, so we're honestly not too worried about this.

Lallie tells me she didn't even play with A yesterday, so that means she's making other friends.  She also said she played by herself on the playground.  That worried Daddy a bit, but not me.  Some days she plays by herself and some days with the other kids.  It's always been that way and I love that she has the confidence and independence to play by herself and not be anxious about it.

When she got home, we were told all about her Science class.  Every day they have a related arts class (C.A.M.P.S. - Computer, Art, Music, PE and Science).  She told us all about the tortoises, turtles, baby scorpions and even about the Bearded Lizard that has a black chin when he's mad.  "But today he had a white chin, which means he was happy but if you touch his bootie, he gets mad."  We found out that the bootie is apparently the glass on the aquarium?  We're not sure about this....but that is what she said!  Haha!

Here's another interesting thing.  They sit on balls in her class!  Yes, exercise type balls with feet on them.  The teachers at Lallie's school have done lots of research and apparently, they keep the kids from slouching and keeps them alert from their sitting upright.  They are allowed to move around and make tiny bounces as long as both feet are on the floor and tummies are to the table.  If they act up, they get their ball taken away from them. According to the teacher, they get the ball taken away once and it never happens again.  It's also great exercise for the core (trust me, I sat on one during a 30 minute orientation and my sides are SORE!  Haha!)  The kids don't sit for longer than 20 minutes at a time, so it's not a long-term issue.  Lallie could barely sit on her ball with her feet to the floor, she's so short.  They  might have to let some air out of hers!

Lallie is also in Extended Day school and apparently had a blast yesterday and fit right in with the other kids.  She was a super happy kid last night, in a great mood.

SCHEDULE:

We have a completely new schedule now and we are certainly still adjusting!  Lallie and I have both been extremely tired (maybe we should have practiced the wake-up calls???)  I'm sure we'll adjust in the next couple of weeks but 6 am is EARLY!!
Car line was breeze this morning, much faster than I though it would happen.
Lallie is LOVING the lunch line and actually eating it!  She said she didn't have enough time to finish yesterday so she "...has to work on her time to eat so I can finish before the bell rings."  I'm LOVING this....she is such a slow eater so her actually acknowledging the time is HUGE for us.  We also went through the lunch menu together to decide what days she would eat at school and what days she'd take her lunch.  She decided to eat at school a majority of the time.
The biggest thing about this new schedule is I'm at work much earlier, which means I leave earlier.  With Lallie's new and longer days, I don't want her to get too tired out, especially if she has homework and we'd like to have a little time with her at night before bedtime, without rushing.  Her young "glory" days are soon to be over and we want to spend as much time with her as possible.  It only speeds up from here after all!

So, that's all for today.  I'll share pictures from our trips tomorrow!

Happy First Day of School Y'all!

Latest Lallie-isms and U.K.'s Unusual Diet

On Saturday (which is two days before Lallie's actual birthday but the day of her party), she came running out of her room, crying to Granny:

"Granny, I'm not 5, my legs are still four year old long."

During bath time, I almost always tell Lallie to make sure she washes all her body parts, including her "hoo-hoo."  The other night, I accidentally used the word "vagina" to which she responded:

"Mommy, is va-gi-na (real slow) Spanish for hoo-hoo?"

The dog on the other hand....oh the dog.  I think we figured out why he was feeling so sluggish and acting so weird because he seems perfectly normal and frisky now.   When Lallie takes off her PJ's in the morning, she likes to kick her pants and undies as high in the air.  It's a game for her.  I always pick up her PJ's and put them in the laundry.  I guess I forgot one morning or her undies fell out of the little pile I was carrying.  Never noticed a thing....until....

....the dog pooped out that pair of undies.  And to add to the issue, there was a sock in there too!  He's been known to eat socks before, but undies? Really?

Oh dog!

Happy Tuesday Y'all!

Lallie's 5th Birthday Weekend

Saturday, we celebrated Lallie's big 5th Birthday!!  Today is actually the big day (to which Lallie woke up asking if she was any taller.  She also asked this on Saturday and cried when she discovered her legs were still the same length).

Friday night, we went out to dinner and then stopped by Cold Stone Creamery to start off the sugar infested birthday weekend.  Lallie eyed the chocolate covered cone and of course, Grandaddy complied with her request! :-)

We started out the day opening the family gifts.  Here's her newest dress-up dress, princess hat and nail polish from Aunt Jess and Uncle Pat.  A true girly girl!

I love this picture.  Lallie received a wedding dress outfit from Husband and I.  She has LIVED in this dress since she opened it (whenever we're home and the veil to dinner last night).  She has already started planning her wedding, asking if she can wear my dress and if I will make her flower girl dresses like Ashleigh's wedding.
Oh boy.
The red thing is a crab pool float from one of her friends.

The AMAZING rainbow cake!!

And the inside of the amazing rainbow cake!!!  And it tasted even better than it looks!  This was made by a good friend of mine that owns a cake shop and she is just so talented!  We had to take 20 pictures before we could even eat it!

Lallie and her Aunt Jess.  :-)

Lallie and Aunt R.

FRIENDS!!!!

The Lilly girls.  :-)

It was hot, hot, hot so we ordered a snow cone machine!  We also had a bounce house and the kids loved it!  They were in and out of the pool and bounce house all afternoon.

Snow cone central.  Thanks Husband!  (He must have spent an hour making them for the kids).

A spoiled little girl!

That night, the family went out to dinner at an Italian restaurant where Lallie was serenaded with Happy Birthday.

Our last night with the family, one the way home from dinner.

It was a great weekend!  We missed my family, Ashleigh and Matt, but they were all here with us in spirit.

Happy Monday Y'all!

$100 Makeover: Guest Bath / Stencil Question

It's been a crazy few days!  Between guest bathroom remodeling, a small 24 hour cold bug, work and the prep for family and Lallie's birthday bash this weekend.....we are worn out!   But the house is ready for receiving guests and we can't wait for everyone to get here to celebrate Lallie's big 5th birthday (yay!!!)

Here are the before pictures of the guest bathroom.  This is the one room in the house that I desperately despise.  I dislike the tile, the color, the cabinets...I don't like any of it.  The worst though was the wallpaper.  I couldn't stand the icky brown and gold colors (though I do love palm trees....just not in this color combination) and am so glad that it's GONE!  I think I told you before that the paper was in bad shape too, peeling and water damaged.  It was just a hot mess.

Plus I just LOVE Hollywood lighting.  I love the bright bulbs, the extreme heat they put out, the dust they gather all over the top!  (You do get that I'm being sarcastic here, right?)

So, we did a quick remodel.  Sunday, we removed the wallpaper.  Monday, Husband did some drywall (as the wallpaper made a mess of the walls) and primed.  Tuesday, Husband finalized the drywall and priming and we painted (I cut in, Husband rolls).  Wednesday, we cleaned up, put in the new light fixture and re-hung the medicine cabinet, shower curtain and towel racks.

Husband "scoring" the wall with the Paper Tiger.  It punches tiny holes in the wallpaper so the DIF solution can penetrate the glue so it call be easily stripped.  ("Easily stripped."  Haha....that's funny.  It was FAR from "easily stripped.")

I won't show any AFTER pictures yet because we need to decorate to match the new color scheme (a very light green, very fresh and clean - Behr Meadow Light).  For now, with guests coming, we just re-hung everything we already had as a time saver.
Already better and brighter!  Wallpaper GONE!  (See all the teensy, tiny wallpaper pieces on the floor?  Easily stripped?  Not one bit!
Longer term plans include removing the mirror and replacing it with a wall hanging mirror and eventually, replacing the cabinet, tile and toilet but those are down the road.  The tub is ceramic so I don't see us ever replacing it.

At least with the new green, I don't severely dislike the cabinet and tile.  They look more cream colored than beige now so we are happy campers!

Now, here's a question.  See that large section of wall above the toilet?  Husband wants to put a stencil of some sort there (maybe a palm tree, sticking to that decor).

I'm resisting this idea but do know that stencils are big in decorating right now.

What do you think?  Where would you look for a stencil?  What would you suggest?

In other news, Lallie had Silly Day at school a few days ago.  This is the outfit she picked, complete with a french braid on one side of her hair and a pony tail with a big bow on the other.  She won the prize for Silliest Dresser.  :-)  (The sun was in her face, thus the severe squint).

I think this picture is hilarious.  This is on the way home from Silly Day in her Silly Hat.

Lastly - I started working on my next $100 Makeover project....my closet!
Remember THIS post?

I pulled down a couple of boxes that haven't been unpacked since we moved into our other house in 2003 (wowsers).  One box was filled with heavy coats and I wonder why we never did unpack this box?  Hmmmm.....

Anyways, look what I found!!!  My old Express jean jacket from the 90's!  Yahoo!  Everyone is back into the jean jacket craze and I just purchased one for Lallie for this coming fall.  I have been wanting to buy one, but now I don't have to!  Yay!

Happy Thursday Y'all!

U.K. Update and Weekend Update ($100 Makeover)

Wow!  I cannot believe the outpouring love for our Mr. Dog a/k/a U.K.  I certainly appreciate it!  It's amazing how (dog lover or not) these animals become a part of the family.

Last night, even though it was annoying the daylights out of me, I thought to myself how much I really do enjoy having U.K. at my heels as I clear the dinner table, hoping that he would get a scrap or two.  I would miss Lallie's big smile as she feeds U.K. those desired scraps.  I would miss U.K.'s special trick, the hug.  U.K. can't jump up and do this anymore but if Husband is sitting on the floor and you say "U.K. hug" he comes over and leans up against you so hard that you almost fall over.  He's giving us genuine hugs!

Anyways, on to the diagnosis.  The vet says I was freaking out a bit.  That U.K. is very healthy given his age and this is just par for the course as he gets older.  He gave us pain pills however, I wouldn't know when to give them to him.  He's always smiling and wagging his tail, pain or not!

The above being said, both bloggers and friends in real life have told me that this is common as goldens get older and are nearing the end (pains me to say that).

I'm sorry, but if it were Husband or Lallie that suddenly couldn't get up and acted paralyzed, I'd be worried and totally freaked out.  But then it got me to thinking about what it's like for older people (my grandparents, our elders).  Is this what it's like when you're body just doesn't work anymore?  You have a hard time getting out of the chair and then something just won't move like it's meant?  I mean I know that's true and that is what actually happens, but you don't really think about it in depth until you actually live with someone (or some-dog) in that situation.

The main thing, Mr. Dog is doing fine, he's just plain old.

Still makes me sad though.

_____________________________________________________________________________

This past Saturday, Lallie and I had a Mommy-Daughter date.  We went shopping at the mall, stopping by Target on the way home for birthday party supplies for next Saturday and then we went out to lunch.  That afternoon, we stopped by the library.  Lallie LOVES the library and came home with a whopping twelve books!  She LOVES to read!

After we got home, we went swimming for a while and then some friends stopped by for a little visit.  Saturday night, we stopped by Home Depot (more on that below) and then stopped by a local fish joint for some of the best fish tacos I've ever had!

_____________________________________________________________________________

Back to the Home Depot trip.

Saturday night, Husband and I decided to do a last minute home improvement project.  Of course, in our household, it wouldn't be a home improvement project unless it was done on-the-fly, one week before the family arrives!  Yes we do.  We ALWAYS manage to get ourselves into something major (and something in which the guests would so desperately need while visiting) just a few days before my parents, his parents, his brother, Ashleigh....any of them come to visit!

The last time we re-did a guest bathroom, it was just a few weeks before Ashleigh was coming to visit in our old house.  Except with that bathroom, we ripped everything out, right down to the stud walls and started over with new fixtures and everything.  That was fun!

It's like a newborn baby.  New mothers always find themselves in a similar situation.  "Oh no, baby is getting tired and ready to go down for a nap....so....I better....empty the dishwasher, start a load of laundry, sweep the floors, clean out the fridge, start on dinner and fix my hair.....before the baby goes down."

That's us, but with home improvements projects.  "Oh no, the family is coming....so.....we'd better...... strip down the wallpaper in the guest bathroom, drywall, paint and re-decorate and we'd better hurry because they'll be here in four days!"

Did I forget to mention that we both work full time?
(and I don't do drywall....thank goodness Husband does!)?

So yesterday, we scored the paper, removed it, removed the backing and Husband started working on drywall repairs.  We want to paint rather than re-install new wallpaper, so he needed to smooth out the walls and put on some fresh drywall mud.  We've never removed wallpaper before so we were learning as we went.  For this tiny room, it took three hours to remove the wallpaper.

What was Lallie doing during all of this?  Watching a movie (since it was raining outside) and playing princesses.  Here's a picture of her taking a break and eating a healthy snack (wheat tortillas cut up into triangles, sprayed with olive oil spray and baked for 15 minutes.....just a little aside there).  Yes, that is a doll stroller.

I'm looking forward to showing you the before and after pictures!  I left my camera at home, so you'll get the before pictures tomorrow.

I know I said my closet would be the first in the $100 Makeover series, but that's taking a little longer to organize than I thought!  Even though the bathroom is more labor intensive, it's not as much organization, so that's up first!

Until tomorrow......

Happy Monday Y'all!

Mr. Dog =(

It's no secret U.K., our golden retriever is old.  He'll be 14 this coming October, which is quite old for his breed.  He hasn't been a puppy for quite some time, but in the last recent months, he has been quite frisky.  He plays tug-o-war with Lallie and they chase each other around the house.  It's always fun looking at U.K.'s big smile and wagging tail and of course, to hear Lallie's laughs and screams.

But the past few weeks, he hasn't been himself.  He's been having lots of accidents in the house and then yesterday, I arrived home at around noon to check on him and found this.

Cute right?

Of course it is, that's why I took this picture from my cell phone (afraid he would hop down before I got the picture....I think there's something smudging my lens!)

This is U.K.'s chair.  His very own personal Lazy-Boy that he's had for years.  The chair sits right outside our bedroom in a little alcove (because he's not allowed on the carpet in our bedroom) and this is where he sleeps (with a little cleaning now and then!  (You should also know, for this story, that there are two steps down into this alcove area.)  Shortly after I go to bed, I always hear U.K. hop into the chair and it makes this little squeaking sound letting me know he's there.  If Husband goes to bed before me (which is rare), it throws U.K. completely off.  He just paces back and forth between the chair and the living room waiting for me to go to bed.  It stresses him if our bedtime routine is knocked off balance.

Anyways, after I took the picture, he didn't move, he just stayed there, like that with his paws on the floor and his back end in the chair.  I got closer to pet him and say "what's wrong?" and realized that the area smelled funny.  Not like an accident, but like wet dog smell.  I called him again, and again and again and he tried to get down and he couldn't.

He was also panting really hard.  I mean, as if he had just come home from a really long walk.

I walked away for a minute to set my things down and came back to his front paws stretched nearly 3 feet out from the chair (with his hind legs still on the chair just like the picture) and on top of the first step up into the main room.

Before I could get to him, he literally fell out of the chair and sprawled himself across the stairs.

He could not get up.

I had to lift his back end and push him up to the top stair.

Then he just laid there, didn't even move his back end to comfort himself.  Laid there just like I put him.

It's like he was paralyzed or something.

After a minute or two of petting and talking to him, he stood up, shook it off and got back to his typical smile and wagging tail.  I let him out to do his duty and he did just fine.

I check the chair to make sure it was in fact, not soiled and it wasn't.  After about five minutes away from the area, the smell dissipated (old dogs, do smell....especially their breath.)  So I put it all together, the smell, the panting and realized..... he'd probably been standing like that in the picture for a while.  No telling how long.

I immediately called Husband and we decided to get him to the vet.  The doctor is going out of town for a couple of weeks, but the symptoms sounded too serious to let him go without an appointment for that long.  So I dropped him off this morning before work and am awaiting the phone call to see if everything is all right, if something is really wrong, or if he's just plain old.

Regardless, we know that our time with him is drawing to a close and that makes me very, very sad.  In fact, I'm tearing up as I write this last sentence, even for a fair-weather dog lover like me.  We've had many, many good years with him and we, especially Lallie and Husband, have formed bonds with him over the years.  I even have the sweetest picture of him in my office.  It would be sad to have to let him go.  =(
