Mary, Mary….How Does Your Garden Grow?

Quite well, actually.  Thanks for asking!

As you know, Husband built these lovely and large raised garden boxes so we could plant and grow fresh vegetables above the sandy soil of Florida.

Here’s Lallie helping to plant some strawberries a few weeks ago.

And here we are planting the seeds for lettuce, cucumbers, peas, beans, zucchini, onions, radishes and green peppers and plants for more tomatoes and jalapenos.

Here our our beautiful vegetables so far, about 3 or 4 weeks after planting (please excuse our ficus hedge, it did not fair well in the winter freeze of 2010.

Strawberries are in the pots.

OH how I cannot WAIT to pluck these off the vine!!!  Tomatoes at the grocers here leave much to be desired.  But these tomatoes are tasty, tasty, tasty and we can hardly STAND leaving them there to finish ripening.  After all, we’re southern…..we do love a good fried green tomato!

And this is our rabbit, our pet if you will.  He’s come back year after year to visit us and we’ve always had fun watching him hop around the yard.  Until now.  This little fur-ball is nibbling our plants!  Ack!  Husband wants to give it lead poisoning, which would destroy Lallie’s little heart (of course, not in front of her).  I suggest we just put up some wire fencing.  We haven’t decided yet.

Oh,how I can’t wait for everything to be ready to eat and fill our tummy’s!  Lallie is even excited about eating vegetables.  She’ll eat a tomato off the vine, but she won’t eat one from the store!  Frankly and based on what I said above, I don’t blame her!

Happy Tuesday Y’all!

  2. I was just talking (like 5 minutes ago) about how I can't wait for the greenhouse grown tomatoes to be GONE! I am so tired of getting sandwhiches at places and the tomatoes being pink and crunchy.. ewww Can't wait to eat some "real" ones!!

  5. I don't blame Lallie, either. Tomatoes are not nearly as good at the store. Heck, where I live, they are never worth eating (Unless you buy them from an organic place.).

There are some very good sprays on the market that don't contain pesticides. All-natural, if you would. I would definitely consider some kind of wire fencing. It's not the most attractive, but it will keep the critters out.

Plus, where there's one bunny, there's more. You know how they love to multiply. Hehehehe...

    Happy Wednesday!

I am SOOOO jealous of your wonderful climate. Mother Nature dumped more snow on us overnight. In fact, it's snowing right now. I've about had it!

Do you have a spare room???

  6. My Henry prefers just picked vegetables to the store-bought ones, too. In Virginia, we grew asparagus, and he would pick it and eat it raw in the garden, but he wouldn't eat it if I bought it at the store. I don't know if asparagus will grow in Florida, but if it does, give it a try. Lallie would probably love it!
