Lallie has SERIOUS American Girl fever. We've been getting the magazines in the mail for a while and she is like me with the Lilly Pulitzer or Pottery Barn magazines. She carefully scopes out every single page over and over again picking out all her favorite outfits. She's asking for one for Christmas (uh-oh).
Lallie has never been much of a doll girl. She loves her tiny princesses that are 2" tall and oh-so-much-fun when we step on them and get stone bruises. But lately, she's been pulling out her bigger dolls and playing with them. Recently her friend Kayla brought over an American Girl doll and Lallie has been obsessed since.
So after much discussion with Husband, we decided it was time (that and the fact that she's going to the American Girl store in January with a couple friends for Kayla's birthday).
I called the American Girl store. Can you believe that they do not make a light haired, light skinned, green eyed doll? She asked me if strawberry blond was close enough and of course, I said no. Lallie has very light blond hair, so blond it was silver when she was born! There's not even a custom order for say $10 more!
That's okay. We discovered the newest doll, Caroline has aquamarine eyes and has a Dutch background (I think).....so that works.
American Girl has free shipping until the 20th (code PF29096), so I went ahead and ordered the Caroline doll, the accessories and hair pick/brush. She also wants a doll carrying case, a set of pajamas and a masquerade ball dress and setup (all items she's been talking about for months). She also wants Caroline's ears pierced. All combined, that's like $300!!!!

I figured if she's good and treats it well, she can get the ears pierced and pick out one outfit when we go to the American Girl store. Thereafter, she can get other items on special occasions.
What about the little girls in your lives? Do any of y'all have American Girl obsessed little girls? Ah, my little Lallie is growing up!
Happy Thursday Y'all!
I'm 21 now but growing up I played with American Girls all the time....I had Bitty Baby, Molly, Kit, Samantha, and 2 look-a-likes (I was the only girl on both sides of the family = spoiled). One Christmas my parents even got me furniture for them!

I had crazy American Girl doll fever! I had one of the create your own dolls and I named her Elizabeth. I loved all the books and accessories, especially Samantha's. My mom made me a lot of clothes for my doll and my dad made me a beautiful trunk. I still have everything - if I ever have a daughter she will inherit it!
ReplyDeleteI still have alllllll my American Girl dolls from growing up! It's a great tradition to start.
ReplyDeleteI am 24 now and I played with American girl dolls when I was little! I still have them and all the clothes and accessories and TREASURE them! They were my absolute favorite toys as a child. My mom recently asked if I wanted to give them away and I was appalled! I will pass those things to my (future...hopefully) daughter! I had Samantha, which we have pictures of me opening for my 6th birthday. I was beside myself! I also eventually got Felicity and a girl of today which you could customize to look like you. I think it is awesome and totally worth the cost to give one of these to your daughter! I also read every single book for all the dolls cover to cover! I loved reading their stories!
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! I'm getting really excited about all this now! :-) She's so excited she even wants to take the magazine to show Santa so he will 100% know which one to get for her. xoxo
DeleteWow! It sounds like American Girls are quite the tradition! Maybe they will become a tradition with Lallie (judging she doesn't destroy its hair...my worst nightmare when buying a $100 doll!) I wonder why I'd never heard of them until I had my own little girl. Maybe I'm getting old. Hmph! :-)
ReplyDeleteI would not skimp on the actual doll but Target has an American Girl knockoff with all kinds of cute accessories and outfits for way cheaper if you ever want to supplement her collection with those. Or if say...Auntshleigh ever wants to supplement her collection...
ReplyDeleteGo right ahead and supplement away!! And great idea! :-) PS- HAPPY HOUSE CLOSING DAY!!!!! :-)
DeleteOhhhh, American Girl dolls!!! It makes me gidddy just to think about them. There is no telling how many hours I spent pouring over the catalogs staring at all of the beautiful items I wanted. I got Samantha (who has been retired) when there were only the three original dolls and the company was more often called Pleasant Company. It was such a special treat when I finally got my doll and I collected her things for years. Actually, when they discontinued her I bought a few of the newer things I had never gotten and put them in storage. When they first created the doll hospital I had to send Samantha in because an arm fell off. They called me to say that I had one of the original heads and asked if they could please have it for historical reasons! Of course I said yes and have regretted it ever since. So...after this long comment I'm all for sweet Lallie getting an American Girl!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like someone has already mentioned an american girl of today (now called my american girl) - which you can customize to look just like lallie. i just checked and there is one with light skin, blonde hair and green eyes.
ReplyDeleteand if she ruins the air, lucky for you she can take her doll the the "beauty salon" and have it fixed.
you'd think i was much younger than 28, but i just realized i have no idea where my samantha doll is (still not over her being "retired").
I LOVED my American Girl dolls! I had Kit and a girl of the year, Kailey. For the hair thing maybe at some point get her a doll with short hair also. I had all the clothes tons of accessories etc. It was my life and always what I got for CHristmas and birthdays from my grandma. Lallie will have so much!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to take Shelby to an American Girl store!!! I thought about buying her her first baby doll for Christmas but am still undecided on which one.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking Lallie in January as part of a birthday party! I can't wait (of course, I'm not telling her a thing about that until that day or I'll never hear the end of it!)
DeleteI still have my American Girl doll, I loved getting a new catalog in the mail. Saw where someone already mentioned the accessories from Target, I got some for my cousin to go with her American Girl and she loved them even though they weren't AG brand.
ReplyDeleteI was just like Lallie and used to carefully read the American Girl catalog every time it came to our house. Of course, my mom only ever bought me the books, but never a doll! Maybe I can convince her now since they came out with a doll with my name ;)
ReplyDeleteI never got one and I still want one! I wanted Molly! ;)
ReplyDeleteI attribute my long fascination with World War II history to the Molly stories when I was a six year old. To this day, I still remember little facts about pioneer life and life at the turn of the century because of Kirsten and Samantha. (I am old, so by the time the newer dolls came along I was aging out. And, also, I'm kind of soap-boxy the brand is moving away from its original historical roots, but I digress..)
ReplyDeleteAll that to say, make sure to buy the books that come along, and think of it as an investment in her education.
I think American girl dolls are great! I had Samantha growing up and literally was obsessed with history as a child which continued into college!
ReplyDeleteOh how fun! I wanted one but my parents wouldn't go for it but they weren't so big back then.
ReplyDeleteMy little ladies are not into this ... yet. But I figure it is a matter of time!
ReplyDeleteAw, I used to love American Girl dolls! I had Samantha. I hate to think how much my family spent on those things when I was an oblivious little kid!
ReplyDeleteMy girls have Felicity and Elizabeth - both Colonial Williamsburg themed - perfect for us Virginians! They are both discontinued now. It's a very expensive hobby, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteEmma is a fanatic about American Girl. She has so much stuff it's overwhelming, but she LOVES it. She never played with dolls as a younger child either, (just her little princess statues), but about 7 years old, she discovered AG and just ate it up. She watches AG stuff on YouTube, constantly does their hair and plays with them etc. Yes, they are expensive, but they are so well made. Target and Michaels have GREAT clothes for the dolls. They are standard 18 inch dolls, so etsy and ebay have lots too. The consignment stores often get some stuff in. Don't worry about the hair, it's easily fixable. Plus, the doll salon at the store can make it better quickly, and it's less than $20. It's so fun! The ear piercing is great, but they earrings are hard to change. I'm not sure your little one could do it. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI have Samantha (seems to be a trend with your readers) and a custom one! Looking back, they are the only toys from my childhood I really loved and took care of. I still have mine (and all of the accessories) to hopefully pass to my future girl one day!
ReplyDeleteAvery is recently obsessed (how did they even know to send us the catalogues?!) I LOVED mine as a child! I can't believe they only customize certain ways, but I'm glad you found one!
ReplyDeleteBuck up Jenn. My youngest, who turns 10 tomorrow, STILL has a huge love for American Girl dolls and everything else American Girl Doll. There is no sign of it letting up either. I'm perfectly okay with it. It's a fun thing for her to collect and be into. It also makes me feel like she's still my baby that she plays with dolls.
ReplyDeleteMy Christmas lists growing up were filled with American Girl... I had a few but Felicity was my favorite. It's sad she was discontinued!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they didn't have blonde/green eyes but looks like you found a good match :)
