Preppy Pink & Green DIY Topiary

This is such an easy DIY project, anyone can do it. It's a ribbon topiary tree that can be made in any group of colors and any theme, holiday or whatever. I chose to make a pink & green topiary for this post (surprise, surprise) and it will adorn my pink & green guest bedroom with a picture frame I made to match!

First, gather your supplies.

I cheated. I bought this tree at Target on sale for $4.99. The tree was $15.00 originally and ALL of them were on sale. I wonder why? It doesn't at all look fake and plastic-y! People were actually looking at me quite strange as I walked up to the register with three of these things.

You can also get your own pot, moss and tree sticks at JoAnn's, Michael's and the stick could really come from your own yard! All I have are pine needles and palms, so I had to go fake.

First - take your scissors and snip this thing bald!!!

Next, take your styrofoam ball, again, can be bought at any craft store or Wal-mart. Take your scissors and make a hole big enough for it to fit on the stick. Use hot glue to keep it in place.

I like to use three coordinating ribbons. I used pink/white dot, green/white dot and white for this project. I also like to change up the fabrics a little so it's not fabric-monotonous. I used two grossgrain and one satin. Cut your pieces into 2 to 2.5 inch pieces. Curl them, and stick them into the styrofoam in random spots with stick pins.

When you are done randomly placing curled ribbons all over the styrofoam ball, fill in the gaps with moss. You can pick several different types of moss. I like the Spanish moss the best, it's the most natural looking to me, plus it glues and sticks well.

Fill in your spotty areas with the moss by using a hot glue gun. Careful not to burn yourself!

Lastly, tie a bow underneath the tree and decorate the pot if you desire. Here is the finished product! It's so much cuter in person.

Now, you can make these in any color, for any season or holiday or room. The possibilities are endless. I just made a line green, red plaid and brown one for a friend for the fall season. Lime green is really trendy right now in decor. Open any Pottery Barn or Ballard Design catalog and you'll see!

Happy DIY - ing! If you make one, I'd love to see pictures!

By the way, my 100th post is coming soon. Be on the lookout for a giveaway! It just might happen tomorrow!
